One of three black-types on the Friday race card at Gosford Racecourse for January 8, this year’s $150,000 Listed Gosford Gold Cup (2100m) may be low on numbers but it is already shaping up as a top class country feature.

Of the current entries the highest rated hopeful is the locally-trained stakes winner Mighty Lucky prepared by Fred Cowell.

The Casino Prince six-year-old has won two of his past three starts including his big two and a quarter length victory over Junoob in Randwick’s Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) on Boxing Day.

He is yet to win at Gosford or over further than 2000m, but the lead-up form including the brave fifth in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) on December 12 is hard to knock heading into his fourth run at Gosford.

Sydney’s premier trainer Chris Waller dominates the current Gosford Gold Cup entries numbers-wise with a trio of runners including last start winning Lonhro six-year-old Loophole.

The gelding beat home Magical Stance by over a length carrying a hefty 60.5kg to victory in a Benchmark 85 over 1900m at Rosehill just last Saturday, winning form he’ll be out to continue on the quick back-up if accepted into Friday’s Gosford Cup field.

Waller has also nominated Dances Of Heroes who ran third to stablemate Loophole last weekend crossing 2.1 lengths away and expat Kiwi mare Telepathic.

On November 28 Mossman five-year-old Telepathic enjoyed her sixth career win with a fine effort in the Listed ATC Cup (2000m) at Rosehill.

She has struggled over less distance in her two runs since however when sixth in the Villiers Stakes and sixth again this time beaten three lengths as the odds-on favourite from December 28 in Randwick’s $85,000 December Handicap (1600m).

Telepathic can improve on that in the Gosford Cup up over a more suitable distance of 2100m.

Along with Mighty Lucky and Loophole the other last start winner in the mix for Friday is the Gai Waterhouse-trained Kontiki Dane, an in-form four-year-old Danewin mare.

She was last seen defeating Sebrina by a narrow margin over 1900m at Rosehill on December 19 in her longest distanced win to date, and how she handles the step up in class and distance will be key to her winning chances at Gosford.

Other notable Gosford Gold Cup nominees include the Joe Pride-trained Destiny’s Kiss and Waterhouse’s other entry Pheidon who is Group 1 performed and who won the 2014 Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) earlier in his career.

The Gosford Gold Cup 2016 field and barriers are out on Wednesday, so before then make sure you have an account open and ready to go through Ladbrokes.com.au where depositing $50 and quoting the code BONUS150 will see you enjoy $150 in additional bonuses this summer!
