Seven Horse 2016 Gosford Cup Field Released

January 6th, 2016

Just seven stayers will face off in the Gosford Cup 2016 this Friday including two for Gai Waterhouse who saddles-up top weight Pheidon and the rails-drawn Kontiki Dane.

Due to jump as Race 6 at 6:28pm (AEST) as the penultimate event on the seven-race Gosford card this Friday evening, the $150,000 Listed Gosford Quarries Gosford Gold Cup (2100m) attracted a diminutive field.

There are still plenty of classy staying types in the mix however including Waterhouse’s in-form daughter of Danewin, four-year-old Kontiki Dane.

The mare has run top two in her four most recent runs over 1800 – 2000m and steps up to 2100m for the first time in the Gosford Cup from an inside barrier one draw.

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy retains the ride on the 56kg minimum, Gosford Cup weights raised two kilograms with the non-acceptance of original top weight Mighty Lucky (59kg), after guiding Kontiki Dane to a narrow win carrying 57kg over 1900m at Rosehill on December 19.

This weekend she drops in weight and will get a smoother ride after jumping from 11 of 12 that day and is likely to sit at the top of the Gosford Cup betting markets at

Waterhouse’s other hope carries the 58kg top weight with Tommy Berry to ride Pheidon from gate five this Friday.

The five-year-old Al Maher gelding has won up to 2040m but is unplaced in his five most recent efforts including finishing a well-beaten eighth behind Medcaut in the December Handicap (1600m) at Randwick on Boxing Day.

Also coming out of that December 26 run and backing up in this summer’s Gosford Cup field are the Joe Pride-trained Destiny’s Kiss and Chris Waller’s expat Kiwi mare Telepathic.

Power Of Destiny seven-year-old Destiny’s Kiss ran third just a neck off the winner in a blanket finish in the December Handicap carrying 57.5kg and is in the Gosford Cup at the same weight next-up with Jason Collett aboard in gate six.

Telepathic also carries 57.5kg as the black-type winning daughter of Mossman looks to atone for her sixth in the same lead-up with a kilo less on her back as the beaten odds-on favourite.

Three back she won the Listed ATC Cup (2000m) in late November, form she can return to as she returns to a similar distance after two Randwick runs over the mile.

Like Waterhouse, Waller has two Gosford Cup hopes this season also represented by Glyn Schofield’s mount Dance Of Heroes in barrier three.

The imported son of Danehill Dancer chases his first win since taking out a Benchmark 84 over 1800m at Rosehill in late October last year, his latest two runs produced thirds at Rosehill including behind Kontiki Dancer on the 19th and Loophole just last weekend.

The Kris Lees-trained Award Season in barrier two and Gregory Hickman’s previous Gosford winner Dream Folk jumping from the outside gate complete the line-up.
